  • Decanted, tasted over 3 hrs
    -med dark red, minimal bricking
    -brambly dark red fruit, oak
-med acidity, dense mid-palate with soft almost lush feel, some ripe black fruit, earthy elements, still some chalky slightly dried out tannins, oak appears on lingering long finish, minimal heat
-still very much alive, quite good

  • Purchased in 1996, it wasn't supposed to turn into a science project - but somehow it lay hidden the cellar all these years. Back then my tasting group was young, enthusiastic and tempted by the zin fruit bombs of the mid 90s. 16.5 alc?: no problem. Searing alcohol levels, blackberry jam and oak chips? - more the better. I've evolved since then and these types of wines were of no more interest. This wine - is not that. The cork was sealed tight with the ulluge at bottom of the neck. The cork completely disintegrated and I had to decant and filter with a fine steel mesh screen. The color had softened just a touch with no perceptible browning - it just didn't look quite as intense as I remembered these. The nose still was intense but without the syrupy brambly sensation. It was more reminiscent of a bordeaux blend. No heat at all from it's stated 14.9% alcohol. In the glass it opened nicely and developed over an hour of so. Sure it wasn't what I remembered what was typical from 20 years ago from these wines, it was a pleasant surprise that I didn't expect.

  • I battled the cork for quite some time, but finally gained access. We really enjoyed this wine. It still has a few years left.

  • Recent auction purchase. Disastrous dry cork that ended up half in the bottle, despite trying to pull with the Ah so. Initially, a bit tart/acidic with the fruit clearly having regressed from its early life. It was good, but not great. Definitely improved over the 1st hour or so. I drank some, put a new cork in and stuck in the fridge for 24 hours. Revisited 24 hours later and wow! what a difference! Gorgeous, gorgeous expression of zinfandel blend! Just fabulous. The fruit has emerged: a beautiful brambly blackberry and cherry with lots of spices. I am so digging this. Bonnie really likes it, too. This has the palate impact of the more extracted present-day zins but without the weight, jamminess, or heat. This is just pure, clean, well-balanced spiced fruit that dances across the tongue. FredB's notes ring true. 89 points first night. Solid 92-94 on the second. YUM!
