  • Blind Tasting 1997 Brunellos & Chianti Riservas (Tom's House, Palo Alto, CA): My pour had chunky sediment but it stayed at the bottom of my glass. Started a bit funky, with some horsey brett, but it wasn't offensive. Spicy in the mouth, slightly bretty with charcoal and an earthy finish. Moderate+ tannins, still needs time. (my 4th, group's 1st)

  • In my view, this is about as good as Chianti gets - and from a hallmark vintage. Red fruit on the nose and across the palate. A certain elegance on the palate with a fine long rich finish. The 1997 Carrobio Chianti Reserve was tasted alongside. More dark fruity, more weighty and perhaps a bit course across the palate. About an 88 point Chianti, which means it is no slouch, but it isn't in the ballpark with the Vigna Vecchia.

These wines have basically been stored undisturbed in a refrigerator since release (47-52 degrees). Both have life ahead and perhaps the Carobbio will improve. But my guess is these wines are at or near dead if stored at substantially higher temperatures.
