  • Drank from Bin North 10. COVID-19 CHRISTMAS dinner with Aline, Pat and Wally. $29.99 Canadian. Shiraz Grenache blend. Acid chalk nose. Dark purple. Chalk oak vanilla presentation, fruit gone. Past prime. 5/10.

  • Excellent. Drunk alongside the 1999 and I preferred this because of the greater fresh berries character though developed. This was also under screw cap compared with the '99 under oak. 14.4% oak.
    Colour: deep red/black berry.
Bouquet: developed fruit but still spicey berries, violets, mint, no mustiness I often associate with older wines under oak, like the '99 this night.
Palate: similar to bouquet, with leather and dirty socks, earth, dark chocolate, licorice brambly characters. Good berry, especially raspberry and blackberry characters, and berry mouth feel. Good length and dry finish.

  • NobleRottersSydney - Blends night (360 Bar & Dining, Sydney): {screwcap, 14.4%} [Stephen] Once an ancient quasi-burgundy-style cellaring wine, it’s a bit disconcerting to see this retaining a lowly place in the d’Arenberg hierarchy; you just know that the fruit from forty years ago is going elsewhere these days. Thus do venerable wineries traduce their own branded heritage. Still, there’s a lovely old raisin/prune sense to the aromas, without too much inherent warmth, and a touch of old carpet; that ancient wine mustiness. The palate is a bit more anonymous, with mild soft tannins, medium acidity, old wine flavour in a generic sense, but without real distinction or depth. Gentle and pleasant. Shortish/medium finish, dry, but not terribly interesting. Doesn’t quite live up to the nose. Objectively OK, but wines of the mid-90s and earlier were much more interesting at a decade old than this.
