98+ pts
double-decanted & slow-ox one hour, served blind, followed over 3 hours before the reveal. (w/'00 La Mouline, '99 & '00 La Turque)
dark red-blue, minimal lightening at rim; intense aromatics emphasized floral & exotic spices, blackberry liqueur, black licorice, sandalwood & smoldering fire; med to full on palate, very concentrated, yet in no way dense; black fruits galore, wildly floral, mineral, smokey charcoal, black pepper, firm but finely balanced tannins & great acids.
Fresh picked cherry blossoms, licorice, wet earth, flowers, peach, smoke, thyme, boysenberry and spice notes were almost off the charts. There is such an amazing level of intensity, focus and purity to the fruit, it leaves you breathless. If that is not enough to seal the deal, the exotic textures and sixty second finish really knocks you out!
So this is the first time I've tasted this wine where it has shown something more than just primary flavors. There is a thickness and power here along with great breed and elegance and it far surpasses the '97 and '98 tasted alongside. We decanted it for over 4 hours and it made a difference. The nose is fantastic with smells of game, smoke, black fruits, pepper and violets. On the palate the texture is like velvet silk with steely tannins and acids lurking underneath. Thick black fruit flavors give way to a stunning finish with hints of smoked meats and dark spices just emerging including this fabulous extra floral dimension that leaves a gorgeous violet impression on the palate. Big, pure, perfectly balanced and in need of long-term cellaring, i now firmly believe this will be one of the greatest vintages of La Mouline ever made and it will last 50+ years. 96+
2003 ExVoto Blanc : E. Guigal My 3rd time and this is just reach maturity. Dense and full-bodied, very attractive and wonderful aftertaste. 97/100
1999 Le Meal : M. Chapoutier Stunning nose, massive, very delicious, very good for the starter. 93-94/100
1999 La Turque : E. Guigal This is splendid wine, very well-made, easy to reach but not a simply wine. Very delicious with a linger, long long-finished. 100/100
1999 La Landonne : E. Guigal Beautiful scent of barnyard and classic Cote Rotie. Man-type, strong structure, seamless texture, delicious and very long finished. 100/100
1999 La Mouline : E. Guigal More subtle and elegant, great in a different way between 3 La-La, sexy and silky. It's very nice to drink them together those 100 pts wines to see how they blended some white grape to change the character of the wine. 100/100
1978 Hermitage La Chapelle : Paul Jaboulet Aine After drinking all those great wines but 1978 HLC shows the amazing thing and beyond. The nose is more clean, more deep and get over La-La easily. Unbelievable !!! This is the 2nd best wine in my world. This is my 3rd time drinking 1978 and still Rock 'n' Roll to me. Perfect ABC, acidity is so fresh, balance is so great and complexity is perfect. Aftertaste takes me back to the beautiful memories of my life...the morning calm, the wind blows, the warm love, the nature kisses. This is absolutely great great wine indeed. I would like to give it 105/100 if possible.
This is very beautiful sweetness but too sad to drink after HLC 1978. Anyway, Rayas is always my favorite. The Burgundy like, super well-made with a wonderful feeling of drinking. The great wine to lean on. 95-96/100
