Meet the man - Nicolas Potel (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck @ Paragon): Alcohol :: 13.5% This is good, though not as refine as the younger brother. The nose has entered into secondary stage with complex, deep, expressive bouquet of umami, sea breeze, saline mineral, sandalwood, dark floral, smoke meat, licorice as well as sweet herbs. Savory entry, follow by preserved plum, blackberry and black cherry. Lots of umami and savory complexity. Tannin is firm but is so well integrated, polished and refine but somehow, lacks a bit of length and the scale of a very good Beze.
2010 Maison Roche de Bellene / Nicolas Potel Dinner (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck, Paragon): En magnum, this was a good enough wine, but it was not an entirely convincing Grand Cru experience, especially when it came just a couple of bottles after an astoundingly good 2010 Bèze. What a nose this had though - by some distance the best bouquet of the night, edging out even an RSV. This just burst out of the glass with heady wafts of damp undergrowth and earth and wilting flowers and a layer of broiled herbs, all swirling around deep aromas of red cherries and berries - what a knockout, this was a bouquet to die for. It was very unfortunate that the palate was nowhere as strong as that though. It was certainly a very pleasant drink, but it showed rather thinner than one would expect after those wonderfully rich aromas, with lean, metallic ribs sticking out a bit amongst some pure notes of dark red cherries and berries. The finish was more minerally than fruited as well, a bit meaner, with just a touch of sour plum amongst the stony accents and some bittersweet herbs. I liked the bright juicy 2001 acidity on this, and it had a nice, elegantly, but it really paled in comparison to the other Grand Crus on show on the night. I am not sure this will improve much and would recommend starting to drink them if you have any.
Directly after opening nose of fresh red fruit, converting into more dark tones with earthiness. Medium bodied, dark fruit taste, very fresh and soft, lovely minerality, long finish. Exceptionally clean and focused, balanced.
