When you think of Nuits St. Georges you think of Henri Gouges. A domaine synonymous with the area, this wine is an example of a very elegant 1996 vintage. From the get-go, the nose gives off its age as tertiary components of leather and oak are balanced with vanilla and hints of red fruit. The palette, though, is packed with life and vibrancy as plenty of redcurrants are in play. Alongside the fruit, herbs medlied with earthiness and smoke, with hints of spices and tar coming into the mid-palette. The finish was long, elegant and silky, bringing in a licorice note. With extremely grippy tannins, this wine feels like it has a lot of life left.

Appley brightness and dark stone fruits on the nose with menthol, liquorice, smoke and slight mushroom character. Medium bodied, rustic and grippy palate with bright and refshing acidity and some stemmy herbaceousness. Very tight from mid-palate on. Not giving much. Reticent and solipsistic showing.

Pleasing earthy aromas, but fairly reticent. Bright cherries and some wet leaves, freshly raked. Initially on the palate, suprisingly primary. Gained complexity over a 4hr decant, but hoping for more.

Splash decanted immediately before serving. Violet tinged red without evidence of age. Nose brings explosive fresh/bright red pinot fruit with underlying earth, floral aromas, but without secondary notes. Palate is wound pretty tight with intense cherry fruit, firm, drying tannins and nice acidity. Interesting that Tanzer (in '98) thought this would be an early drinker. This is a very expressive wine, lovely with food, but may need 10 more years to soften and fully 'come out'.
