Houston Northern Rhone Blowout: My first Rayas. First taste of a big night and revisited a couple hours later. This showed a bit of heat to my palate. I’ve had a few of the other Reynaud wines and this was similar with the volume turned up. A small bit of Brett showed but in a pleasing way. It was silky, some baked red fruit but a little more muddy than I expected. My initial thought was this is probably not the best vintage.

Just a stunning bottle of Rayas. Power and finesse perfectly balanced together. Absolutely no way does this drink like any 2003. Zero heat all nuance and complexity. Strawberry, red berries, amazing spices, dark berries, pepper, and minerality. One of the great wine makers and vineyards of the world.

Bottle opened 3 hours before drinking. Bright nose, rich and complex, olive, garrigue, cherry and figs. The palate is smooth, velvety tanins good freshness (especially for the vintage) and long. Although the wine was relatively fresh, this is still a 2003; it comes with richness and opulence. I tasted a Rayas 2003 maybe 15 years ago, it was much wilder and even more opulent. Not my favorite Rayas. I tend to prefer cooler vintages. Ready now but will stay there for a long while.
