PNP. Cork intact but soft. Nose was all secondary w stewed veg, leather and cigar box. I picked this up about 10 yrs ago at chamber street and should have drunk it then. This was very tired. Lamb kept it in play but alone this was blah. In a larger format this might still be alive

Def not great, but not bad, and it seemed to improve in the glass, but maybe it was the grilled lamb that helped. Aromas of stewed veg (mainly asparagus and bell pepper) and snuffed cigar, a bit of dried berries too. Tart and vegetal on the palate, but there's more intrigue here than on the nose. Past its prime, no doubt.

Surprise of the night. Double-decanted midafternoon. Very ‘79- bright acids, low tannin, floral. Nice depth to the cassis and black raspberry fruit, some cigarbox. A-

Part of a Talbot vertical (67, 79, 81, 96). Cork 3/4 saturated. Surprisingly robust for this vintage, tight from the start with heavy alcohol and spice up front. Surprisingly, opened up nicely 15-30 minutes in. Cedar, moss, clay, oriental spice and a hint of camphor. Pleasantly surprised by the 79, not quite as balanced as 81 in this tasting.

I must say that pulling the cork released an aroma evoking the sense of opening a mausoleum door long closed to all things living. The kindest description could be of mushroom beds lying dormant in winter. Mushroom, dust, damp cellar mold is about the extent of the nose. A brief taste revealed not much at all save for shadows of wood and leather. We decided to set the decanted wine off to the side and opened an '87 Talbot; an obviously poor vintage so the wine prospects for the evening were not so rosy.
90 minutes later we returned to the '79. The off odors had all blown off. The color is remarkably in tact for a 37 year old wine. Still deep and dark at the core center of the magnum with just the suggestion of bricking at the glass rim. The nose has a faint suggestion of wet vegetation. Wood dominates the fore palette; imagine sucking on a popsicle stick! On the finish, notes of cherry struggle to see the light. Lots of tannins within a pucker up finish. This is a bottle that should have been drunk five to ten years ago.
