Very dark, opaq colour and my first guess was a high end Chateuneuf du Pape possible from a top vintage such as 2007 or 2009. Expressive nose with kirsch liqueur, garrigue, bluberry, plum, sweet spices, florality and chocolate. The nose was not very Australian, with the tell-tale mint/eucalypt element present but somewhat pushed to the background. Full-bodied, big, with firm tannins (that made me reconsider my guess for CdP), noticeable heat from 16% alcohol, ultra-rich and ripe fruit and balancing acidity, noticeably higher than what you would expect from a CdP. Very long aftertaste. Needs time but can be enjoyed with an equally rich dish.

Bloody fantastic wine! Nose is redolent of red and blue fruit (blackccurrant, blueberry, fresh plums) together with all sorts of flowers like carnation and violet. Purity of fruit is remarkable. Present is a slight minty or eukalyptus lift as well, but the nose is not very typical of Australia in general. On the nose it is very similar to Chateauneuf du Pape. Palate also reminds premium CdP's but for the tannins which are massive. Still the wine is drinkable even now with the right food accompaniment

Very good considering the difficult 2011 vintage. Quite well balanced.

16% alcohol and in 2011 vintage would have been tough but drinking very nice.
