I personally quite enjoy 1998 Champagnes for their elegance and drinkability. This 1998 Moet & Chandon Grand Vintage Collection is showing well. Maturing ripe chardonnay fruits with smooth yeasty taste. (83/100)

Appearance: Bright and clear, the wine is of light golden colour, with fine and persistent bubbles, watery rim and legs. Nose: Clean, with medium (+) intensity aromas of citrus fruit of lemon, green fruit of apple, floral notes of orchard, autolytic notes of biscuit, stone fruit of peach, mineral notes of stony, sweet spice of star anise, kernel notes of roasted almond, oak notes of vanilla, maturity notes of hay. The wine is developing. Palate: Dry with high acidity, the wine has medium alcohol, medium body, medium (+) intensity flavors of citrus fruit of lemon, green fruit of ripe apple, autolytic notes of toast, oak notes of vanilla, kernel notes of roasted almond. The wine has a medium (+) finish. Conclusion: Very good quality Champagne with an intense nose showing great complexity, with a nice range of aromas showcasing how a great champagne, the palate is equally impressive with good acidity, lively and vibrant, with the perfect balance and demonstrating good concentration and a fairly long finish. It is ready to drink now and can maintain for another 3-5 years.

Amazingly fresh. Could easily think this was 2008. Classic Moët nose. Quite saline, mineral, apple, something nutty, brioche. Beautiful champagne. Great with oysters and smoked salmon. It stood up really well to smoked salmon yet carrying the salmon taste well, becoming slightly more lemony. This is what vintage champagne is all about. Very hard to believe it is 20 years old!
