Sauternes Chinese Banquet Dinner: Amber color. Prominent VA on the nose which largely blew off. Not that sweet. Prickly feel with barleycorn flavors and pleasant grilled nuts, some earth, and bitter citrus. Very much alive but well past its best. A second half bottle was more advanced and clearly maderized.

All Sauternes, All Night (R & G Lounge, SF): What a treat to experience - thanks Fred. Fully tertiary notes of rum raisin, toasted almonds, mushroom, and creme brulee. The acidity here is thrilling, and it drinks like a Sercial Madeira. Acid freaks should find a way to try this wine. A bit of VA, but elegant, notably drier than the rest of the wines but still carries some nice sweetness. Tons of complexity, but doesn't quite have the amplitude of the bigger wines at the table. Still, one of my favorites of the night, with the mouth-watering acidity bringing me back to the glass again and again.

All-sauternes dinner; 12/2/2023-12/3/2023 (R&G Lounge, San Francisco): From 375mL. Toffee and caramel colored; aromatic, nutty, orange marmalade citrus; palate is still slightly sweet but drying out now (Hudak stage 4), nutty, some caramel, some dried fruits; long finish. Really a unique experience to taste a Sauternes at this age. Reminds me of a dry sherry, but not that oxidative. 93, perhaps rating a point higher for the rare experience of tasting a sauternes at this age! Day 2: Alive and interesting, but it has lost a bit of spark compared to yesterday.

What a rare treat to indulge in a 50+ year old vintage wine. This Sauterne brought by Ernie to our autumn tasting at Dr Dan's would have been straw or butter colored upon release, then turn darker to weak tea color and eventually to a maple syrup color. Amazingly, as 53 years of age, it is rusty brownish orange colored still had life in it although not likely to improve from further aging. It showed a slight citrus edge on the nut flavors with a subtle layer of smokiness, I wonder if it held more sweet fruit at one stage that bled off with age.
