Earthy, meaty notes on the nose, energy on the palate, and then finishes with minerality. Tastes like a Saint Joseph. More black pepper but great energy on the palate. 10% new barrels.
My previous comment may have been with bottle shock. Also, the wine very much likes oxygen. Apparently a good 10 hours does it well.

Ahh... why don't we drink more Sonoma Coast Syrah. So this is good stuff, if quite youthful and pretty darn disjointed. Lots of acidity on the back end, lots of spice upfront, lots of palate breath in the middle. Now if, in time, they all harmonize, then we've got something great. And by the way, a pronounced and complex nose to boot.

A tale of 3 wines. First night, good but a little more round and fruit forward than I was hoping for. Second night, fruit is totally in check with lots of a meat/blood/earth flavor that I can't exactly identify. Third night, huge black olive flavor emerged. Very interesting progression with massive changes in the wine over three nights.

THE RED WHALE Sonoma Tasting (The Red Whale): Bacon, savory black olive, blueberry, and an overall meatiness that everyone quite liked. Powerful, tight, dark and brooding. Quite a serious wine but somehow still fresh. This wine is good, but demanding.
