  • Magnum. Lovely example of an aged reasonably priced Napa Cab. 1 hour decant to allow slight but persistent VA a chance to blow off. Nose of smokey tobacco, blackberry fruit and eucalyptus. Velvety, medium-bodied with well integrated alcohol and oak. Light acidity. Spicy vanilla oak, cassis, blueberry fruit with notes of cedar, milk chocolate and dried leather. Slightest hints of black olive and licorice. Long, long lingering finish with a drying grip.

  • Dark ruby/purple color. Nose: blueberry compote, blackberry, and cassis with accents of tobacco, toasted cedar, violets, licorice root, pie crust, vanilla, baking spices, dark chocolate, and new leather. Full body on the palate: blackberry compote, blueberry, black cherry, and cassis framed by licorice root, dark chocolate, tobacco, black peppercorn, baking spices, vanilla, black olive, and crushed rock minerality. Medium+ acidity. Moderate/firm tannins. Lingering blackberry and black olive skin, licorice root, baking spices, tobacco, and crushed rock minerality on the long finish. Big, powerful, complex, and remarkably well-balanced Howell Mountain Cabernet. Classic steakhouse wine meant for dry-aged prime cuts. Cellar until 2016 and drink over the following 7-10 years.

  • Dark ruby color with spice and vanilla aromas. Sweet fruit with lots of oak but pleasant and juicy and drinkable.

  • This wine settled nicely, and is at the right time. I think it has the longevity for another 7-8 years as all the components are there. See previous notes, as this experience is kind of a combo. The first note was with a more immature version of this wine that required a ridiculous amount of time to open (it was enjoyed at a wine function and opened earlier that afternoon). The note from 2013 showed blueberry/fig/dark edges with a backbone of sweet velvety goodness and cedar tannin. This experience showed quite a bit of fruit right up front -- the front of this wine has really matured, and it is also not so harsh on the finish, while still being very velvety and proper. This one was served with about 20 minutes of bottle decanting. I think this one is right on the upslope, about 6 months from the top of the hill. I think 2022 is a very acceptable "drink by" date.
