  • Dinner with Mark Roberson of Goedhuis (Jade Palace, Forum Galleria): This was a real surprise - a historic bottling from when La Grande Rue was still a 1er Cru (before its elevation to Grand Cru level), it was unexpectedly good for a less than perfect vintage, and from a producer that was supposed to be in the doldrums in the early seventies. This had a lovely nose, with red cherries and dates, even some dried fig aromas, surrounded by a halo of dried roses, spice and earthy undergrowth. Really beautiful. In fact, when told it was from a plot that had been elevated my first guess went to Gaudichots / La Tache, given the aromatic complexity here. The palate, if not quite as strong, was delicious too. The flavours of red dates and a mixture of fresh and sour plums were obviously starting to thin out, but there was still enough body here to keep the wine charming, along with a nice juicy acidity that kept it ever so sprightly and alive. Good finish too, with a ring of earth, a bit of spice and more dried flower nuances. Very enjoyable, and one of the most remarkable wines of the night given its origins. This particular bottle was remarkably well kept, but I fear bottles of lesser provenance would already be some way past their prime. Drink up.
