Definatly refined. Blackberry and strawberry to the taste - hitting the back of the tongue. More old world in nature -not your traditional Napa beast. Quite like it although it will get no better holding it.

Jucy, big bodied but a smooth sipper. Great for wine & cheese, but not very complex. Blackberry, a bit of smoke. A bit of oak, but not over-oaked thank goodness. Just missing the wow factor.

This wine was purchased 14 months ago and held. Thought that today would have been the right time. Either this wine is still ridiculously locked up, or just missing something? Either way I will say that it's my fault for popping and pouring a Calistoga wine right out of a 55 degree chiller at a party when the "Vip's" show up. The nose on the wine was actually quite good - deep dark blackberry and boysenberry with a hint of a vanilla....but there just wan't much of it. The entry on the palate was FULL of fruit - not sweet obnoxious fruit, but good solid blackberry with a black pepper note. A very thick wine. Agree with previous rater - more like a Syrah when it comes to the fruit structure. Couldn't get much smoke or leather, and the wine just kind of dropped off in the middle. Not much tannin, although it was a very smooth wine from pretty much start to finish. I have a feeling that my lack of allowing this one to breathe cost me the full experience, and I really do believe this one is still incredibly locked up. Therefore my rating at this point is NR. If you have this wine, I wouldn't touch it for at least another 2 years, and then you probably have about 5-7 years from that point to drink with proper cellaring of course. If I can get my hands on more of this, I certainly will....and won't touch it again until 2016 or 17.

Mouthfeel of this wine is really serious and lovely, Syrah-like meatiness. Would be perfect with a steak. The nose is rather muted, very dark fruit, but as if it wants to pounce. Maybe in time it will? I would have scored this in the 90s if it were more aromatic. And if I had a steak, maybe. I am definitely going back for more to see if it evolves.

Good wine. Not extremely complex but very drinkable.
