One of the fun things about wine is the layers of enjoyment it can provide. The 1985 Pichon Baron is a good but not profound drink, Brettanonyces obscuring some relevant details and slightly underripe but pleasant black fruit mingling with charcoal embers and black olive. But perhaps the most gratifying aspect of drinking this wine is seeing the end of an era at Pichon Baron (or close to the end of an era, anyway). 1985 was the first vintage made by technical director Jean-René Matignon who, joined by Jean-Michel Cazes just a few years later, crafted Pichon Baron in its modern form (evidenced by the wines from 1989 to present). These two men revitalized the estate after a period in the doldrums and the chateau hasn’t put a foot wrong since, their work ably carried on by the next generation.

Garnet with a hint of orange at the rim. Nose initially shy, but opened over the next few hours to show its Pauillac roots. Mouth medium weight, hints of tobacco, hint of cedar. A surprise that it held its own against stiff company.

Decanted 1hr. Nicely aged medium garnet color. So intense and complex nose. Old furniture, cigar, cassis, cedar and so many intertwined flavours that are so Intense. Medium body, so soft silky elegant old pauillac with everything as expected. It’s slightly hollow in mid palate and fruit are starting to fade, so better to drink up. Extremely long aftertaste.

Cork a little soaked, Initial impressions very good but fruit faded fairly quickly leaving aromas of tomato relish, umami, soy, smokey bushfire, dustiness, cigar wrapper, caramel. You can really still get a sense that this is a Pichon Baron linking recent vintages signatures traits with this. Tannins integrated, acid medium+, structure still there. Top stuff. Great with the Stilton.

(Château Pichon-Longueville Baron) Medium red color with pale meniscus; truffle and mushroom nose; lovely tart red fruit, iron palate with a touch of mint and well integrated but still evident tannins; medium-plus finish

Drank alongside the 85 Comtesse and it wasn't far behind. Cedar and coffee, plenty of tang and life. Superb
