More red than purple in color. Pleasant nose of red fruit, earth, and herb, spice. Surprising grip in the mouthfeel, seems still quite tannic after 30 years. Not sure how that didn't overwhelm people in the earlier reviews. Not unpleasant, but very noticeable. Nice breadth of flavors...cherry, herbs, blackberry, milk chocolate, oak, almost floral and/or leafy notes underneath.

Very bright, fresh and floral, the wine is not a blockbuster. It is balanced, lifted, complex and nuanced. Fully developed, with leafy, herbal, mint and floral nuances that mesh perfectly with all the ripe, energetic fruits, this is drinking just great today.

Guys Night - Bordeaux vs Napa (Jason's House): I am not inputting a score, but it would be 88 or lower for sure. I was so looking forward to this wine. We all agreed, and were confused, as to how they were making such modern fruity alcoholic wines in 1990 in Napa. It tastes like it was made by TRB. Reading the wineries tasting note, it's spot on: smoky cassis, chocolate, and licorice. Some red fruit was present, followed by a lot of alcohol. I hope this was an off bottle.

Aged High End Bordeaux Blends (Jason P's, St. Paul, MN): Purple red color. Drank 1 glass over 90 minutes. One of these things is not like the other, and the other was a sophisticated and ethereal '90 Pichon Lalande. For that matter it wasn't like much of anything else we drank tonight. This is massive, immense extracted black fruits, sweet ripe fruit, blackberry, blackberry liqueur, some earthiness and a bit volatile on the nose. The palate picks right up after the nose, big and rich, bold blackberry, blackberry liqueur, soft texture, fairly round tannins with more alcohol showing than ideal. I would not have guessed this was from 1990 - both because this seemed considerably more youthful, and also given the high level of fruit and extraction. This seemed like something that was made after so many changed their style late in the decade. In another setting, this might have been more appealing, but with more elegant aged wines, this stuck out like a sore thumb. YMMD.

Still shows significant tannin. Great nose, lovely palate. Very long. Focused and a bit tight (will see how time in the decanter helps). A great wine only just starting to show some hints of age. Hard to believe a Napa cult cab at 18 years old shows this young and strong. Very much like the best 1989/1990 Bordeaux.
