I have tried a number of Mencias before, and found them all wanting; they were brutally acidic and/or tannic, as were the previous bottles of this wine that I had opened. However, this one was---surprise!----actually good, albeit more of a California-style-fruit-bomb than I would normally drink. It shows strong flavors of blueberry and blackberry, with a bit of toasty oak. The tannins and acidity are still firm, but nowhere near the biting, clawing grizzly bear that they were just a year ago. I wonder if the other bottles would have been good if I'd let them age this long.
