1999 1er Cru Red Burgundies (East London): Medium red with the brown tint of age. A small amount of wet-wool on the nose soon blew off to reveal a well balanced PN. Perhaps the savoury elements outweigh the sweet ones, but I found this very capitvating on the nose as well as the palate - shiny, bright, red fruited. Delicious and extremely moreish. The cork was not in good shape, a bit dicey, but no ill effects. Beautiful and expressive wine.

Opened, but not decanted, 3 hrs before drinking. Initially quite tart w strawberry and cherry. After opening it still has lively fruit at 21 years! Dark fruit w plum, a little strawberry and licorice. Flavors linger altho the fruit has faded a bit, leather and forest on a finish that lingers long enough.

Greater Spotted Beaunes - Two 1999 1er Crus from each main commune in the Cotes de Beaune.. (David P's): Darker fruited and somewhat brooding wine here. No cliched Savigny rusticity here; a more masculine wine than a feminine one but a gymnast and not a power lifter. Texture here is charming and with food later in the evening a real star.

Tight, many hours to open. Mushroom, forest floor, strawberry evolved to cherry
