Should have decanted this bottle longer. It started with a red tartness but not much fruit. Given a little more time, swirling in the glass and shaking the bottle for the last two glasses, and it has really opened up nicely. Along with the original red fruit tartness there is now black fruit, a little raspberry and earth. It is a layered and rich tasting zin with a good long finish.
Big changes since last year. This bottle seems substantially better than the last one. Terrific balance of acidity, dark cherry-raspberry fruit and richness. Seems in line with other vintages of Montafi Ranch.
Tasted over 3 days - consistent throughout (vacuvin'd and stored in fridge overnight). More open and rich than I thought it would be, given the character of other 2011 Carlisle's I've tried. An interesting red-fruited tartness to counter the richness. Drinking rather seamlessly at this point. Excellent Carlisle zin yet again.
Menthol and earth on the nose. On the palate, raspberry, blackberry, tobacco, and black pepper, with earthy notes on the medium finish and good acidity. This is a classic Zinfandel as it is now, but I think it may improve with a few more years on it. I'm not sorry I opened it, but I'm sorry I don't have more.
