Smoke, dark cocoa, roasted Ethiopian coffee single origin with barolo like leathery characteristics. Very rustic and true with dark sweet supple fruits. Lovely development.

For my 1,000th tasting note, I picked the type of wine I love. Clearly, I greatly enjoy obviously fantastic wines like a 1962 DRC or a great vintage of Chateau Latour. However, there is something special about opening a bottle that is not that well know (or is rare) but that has the potential to be great.
From a good looking bottle, other than having a heavily tattered label, this wine had a medium, light red center a light red/orange rims. While not a particularly dark wine, the minimal orange at the rim was impressive. The medium+ intensity nose offered up cherries, oranges, brown spices, quince, and white soil.
In the mouth, this wine was refined but had a nice glycerol mouth-feel. It had light rounded tannin, firm acidity, and excellent length (despite its refinement). This wine was in 93 point territory for the first couple hours. However, after 5 hours in a decanter, this wine developed the classic iron fist in a velvet glove mouth-feel that took it to the next level. A very impressive bottle.
This wine appears to have been at its peak for many years now. While it will easily last for 5+ more years, I see no reason to wait. Enjoy!

Good fill, label and cork. Great color. Hopelessly corked. Good underlying fruit but essentially undrinkable. Bring on screwcaps! alan
