Community Tasting Notes (2)

  • Second of two bottles, and it's a night-and-day difference. This has a flamboyant, Bandol like nose of ripe dark fruit, leather, garrigue, mint, sea air, and other scents difficult to catalogue; on the palate it's got that Provençal salty-mineral tannic grip framing slightly dried out blackish fruit, but just slightly. Delicious! Clearly my other bottle was compromised, not surprising for a 23-year-old wine of uncertain provenance.

  • From Chambers St. Wines, on a lark. Initially this was showing nothing on the nose other than troubling metallic tones, and on the palate it was strangely thin with little fruit, but with a strong note of Provençal saltiness and a fair amount of tannin. With air it has come around a bit, showing savory, aged characteristics and a hint of fruit, and a quite a lot of structure. Clearly the fruit has dried out before the tannins, etc., but there's a kind of aged, rustic grace that is pleasing, if not seductive.
