Community Tasting Notes (average 91.8 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 99 notes)

Tasted by wenderoth on 1/25/2010 & rated 90 points: Opened, decanted and drunk over 3 hours at a restaurant alongside 96 Haut Brion, 01 Pichon Lalande and 97 Yalumba Octavius. Medium ruby with early reddening at the edges, and exceptionally clear. Nose of prune, dark cherry, touch of tobacco. Palate a little linear, possibly reflecting not-quite-maturity; but superior to the Haut Brion on the night. Lovely plum-prune on front and mid palate with some smokiness and tart cassis, finishing with strong but fine powdery tannins. An intellectually if not overly aesthetically interesting wine at this stage of its development: ie. it's all there, it's in balance, but it's not a lot of fun right now. (627 views)

Tasted by TT2000 on 10/25/2009 & rated 94 points: Drank with Sylvia @ Mitsui (Japanese restaurant) in Taipei. Perfect... even with sushi and sashimi. Even better with the beef. (1943 views)

Tasted by tbabes on 10/16/2009 & rated 92 points: The fill was into the neck and the cork was sound. A murky purple core, turning to ruby-red at the rim. Aromas of dry aged beef, ripe dark fruits, cedar, and earth. Medium-bodied, with a relatively structured character (particularly for Lynch Bages) good concentration of fruit, fine delineation and a long finish. A bit too reserved/austere for a classic rating, but an alltogether wonderful claret. (2105 views)

Wine 8
This has to be a Puillac with high Cabernet content. Steely nose, with serious dark fruits and a hint of pencil shavings. Very spicy. Higher acidity and tannin than all others in flight, this is a bodybuilder of a wine. Tannic, full bodied and dense, this has a lot in store for the future. I love the grip and masculinity. This has to be the Pontet Canet.

Vino 8
(3079 views)
Tasted by Paul S on 6/20/2009 & rated 93 points: CT London Event (Hide Bar, Bermondsey, London): Another wine en magnum. This will probably never be as great a wine as the 1996 Haut Brion, but was certainly more developed and ready on the day. A very nice Lynch Bages indeed. Toasty nose, very masculine, with soil, sous bois and a touch of animale. Lots of pwoer hinted at also, with deep fruit tones like plums and leafy cassis tones just spilling out of the glass. Very wow. Palate was a little less expressive, but still pretty impressive, with clean juicy acidity and mouthcoating tannins holding up gummy black fruit and smoky tobacco flavours. Finish was oh so long and well fruited, with more pure cassis tones just pulling away in the mouth. Very good indeed. (3511 views)
Tasted by msny98 on 5/22/2009 & rated 92 points: Popped the cork and that wonderful scent of aged Bordeaux hit me. Nose was dominated by cedar and graphite. It was a bit acidic at first taste but settled in with about an hour of air. Dark color, dark fruit, cassis and plum dominated and some red fruit showing up on the back end. The tannins and structure in a very ready to drink state. This took WOTN at my table at a recent cab dinner (All the Bord lovers went with this one while the new worlders who out numbered us split their votes across a few wines) (3782 views)
Tasted by Deb293 on 5/9/2009 & rated 89 points: Bright ruby with no signs of age. Still pretty vibrant with marked acidity, a hint of barnyard and forest floor on the nose and an interesting pine cone aftertaste. Fruit is rather muted, favoring the cedary side of things. Tannins are soft and well-integrated. Drinking well, but finishes a little dry and lacks the "it" factor in the end. Questionable QPR, now that I think of it. (3523 views)
Tasted by Spencer on 4/10/2009 & rated 90 points: This is fully mature now, although in no danger of imminent decline. A very good Bordeaux for the dinner table. (3996 views)
Tasted by golfwine on 1/30/2009 & rated 88 points: Oh how this wine reminded me of what it is I love about Bordeaux. Veritable "Nose Candy" - I could just smell this wine all night...and did. Wet stone, earth & wild mushrooms; begged for a well-marbled piece of red meat. Amazingly long for a '95 with plenty of structure & grip for at least a few more years. Though, the front end was so smooth & supple, it would have benefited more from the aforementioned piece of beef than from any more time in the bottle. (4255 views)
Tasted by Tory Griffin on 1/30/2009 & rated 91 points: One of those wines you can just smell all night long. Still a dark ruby purple color, amazing classic pauillac bouquet, not a big or overpowering wine but had major finesse while still having penetrating flavors. A remarkable food wine. Still has time left on it, but I love its present state. (4186 views)
Tasted by DSimmons on 1/17/2009 & rated 93 points: Lynch Bages Tasting (Don's House): This bottle was decanted about 3 hours gbefore it was tasted. The wine was delicious and definately in it's drinking window. Flavor profile of spice and dark fruits, currants, earth. To me it seems that there is no rush to drink my other two bottles. (4230 views)
Tasted by johnwine on 1/1/2009 & rated 90 points: i fully agree with Parker on this wine. It has not reached maturity as of this date and I expect it to take another three years plus to come around to full drinkability. I would say try again in 2011 or 2012. (875 views)
Tasted by Claudio161 on 12/8/2008 & rated 92 points: Lynch Bages Vertical Focused on Parker 91+ Point Reds (Sweets and Savories. Fullerton near Ashland. Chicago. IL): Sight - Ruby/eggplant color. Medium viscosity.

Nose: A wonderful nose. Crushed black fruits in a floral garden are what hit me initially. Later waves included cedar, lead pencil, cigar wrapper notes. It has a "damp earth" quality as well - earthy? That also made the nose so appealing. The floral component combined with all the other elements makes for a very pleasing wine.

Palate: I detected some tartness which led me to believe that this was still on the young side of things. Minerality came through along with cassis jam. Velvety tannins.

Overall: A lovely and fine wine that could potentially score better with additional aging. 91-92 points. (7831 views)
Tasted by jordanj on 12/8/2008 & rated 93 points: Lynch Bages Vertical (Sweet and Savories): My surprise of the night. I thought this wine showed tremendous focus and detail that is more akin to Latour at its best. Tight and young but shows tremendous potential. (4566 views)
Tasted by Kdawg on 12/8/2008 & rated 92 points: Lynch Bages Vertical 1961-2005 (Sweets and Savories, Chicago IL): nose: very californian at first with bright red cherries, plums, and a more ripe base of fruits, but as it sat in the glass it then pulled back a bit and became more reserved with dark plums, red currants, dark red cherries, black cherries, spice box, cedar, and pencil lead. When it pulled back a bit, it added a dollop of elegance to some of the power behind it. Very melded on the nose once it calmed down and much more bordeaux

taste: nice sweeter in style with cassis, black and dark red cherries, plums, red and black currants, and pencil lead tones. Very good medium/full feel and fairly open to drink though the tannins are still very present and have a slight razor edge to them

overall: almost two different wines as it sat in the glass. I wasn't much of a fan at first as I don't want a bordeaux to taste like a modern california cabernet, I want bordeaux, but it then retreated into a more familiar style, but with a bit of the california flash that creates a different take on the wine. Good power behind it, its one that still needs years on its side to fully emerge (4431 views)
Tasted by GSW on 12/7/2008 & rated 93 points: A lovely, satisfying wine. I'm not convinced it will improve with more time, but as it is a joy now...who cares? (4332 views)
Tasted by Redteeth on 12/6/2008: Outstanding. The bottle was decanted and then the wine sat in the glasses about 30 minutes before drinking. It was deep in color and rich in taste. It was clasic Lynch Bages Bordeaux. It rounded out nicely over the next hour; and then it was gone. This wine seems to have lots of time left and I expect it may even further improve. (4322 views)

(Lynch Bages) Beautiful nose of tabac, flowers, kirsch and minerals. Palate has loads of sweet fruit with beautiful restraint and great finish with sweet tannin. Great sense of finesse. Very impressive and I believe the first time I have had '95 Lynch.

About red wine
The variety Red Bordeaux Blend on CellarTracker implies any blend using any or all of the five traditional Bordeaux varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. As such, this is used worldwide, whether for wines from Bordeaux, Meritages from California and Canada, some Super-Tuscan wines etc.

Vins du Médoc (Conseil des Vins du Médoc)
The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.
Looking full onto the river from the earliest days, with an important port activity, traces of which go back to ancient times (shipment of bronze as long ago as 2000 B.C.), Pauillac's life has always been intimately linked to the history of wine. Although port activities were at the root of its prosperity, Pauillac had to wait until the eighteenth century when Bordeaux ceased to hold its privileged position to become a wine port. The town then became the natural outlet for the wine production of neighbouring cantons before reaching its zenith in a period when the vineyards were exceptionally prosperous.

The characteristic of the Pauillac terroir is its exceptional relief: the many undulating ridges make it unique morphologically speaking. Highly favourable conditions facilitate the dissection of the layer of gravel. This thin, Garonne gravel from whose very poverty springs great richness, has an extremely effective natural drainage.

With their velvet red colour with a hint of amber, the wines from the Pauillac appellation, full-bodied and rich in tannin, are vigorous. Powerful when young, their aromas of red fruits (black-currant, raspberry) or flowers (violets, roses, irises) melt with the passing of time into a bouquet which is long in the mouth. Rich and complex, the wines of Pauillac deserve to be laid down for a little longer.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)

In order to have the right to the Pauillac appellation of controlled origin, red wines must: - come from the commune of Pauillac and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cissac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Sauveur, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils", - satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
