23 year old Syrah from Russian River. Cork dry and crumbled on opening. Brown bricking yet still thick. Huge blast of aromas upon opening which settled down after about 15 minutes. On the nose buttered popcorn, tobacco, leather. All secondary and tertiar aromas, no fruit. Explosive in the mouth, still has some acidity and fine grain tannins, flavors all over the map, confirmed nose, tobacco, leather, earth, mushroom, super long finish. Not past it’s prime but int the sunset years. Lovely aged wine. An hour in and it is just fantastic.

Great nose, dark purple, lots of fine sediment decanted off. Big on the dark fruits, hints of smoky meat/bacon fat. Not much of the gamey/olive/n rhone Syrah notes. Excellent balance. Very good.

Mi espose has a much better palate than I, so I blind-tasted her on this, our last of the vintage. "Youthful, fruit-forward, vibrant, really spicy, so I'd say a 2012 Zin, maybe one of the Turleys."
Huge success for such an oldster. Round, long finish, pleasant in all regards (eh...there WAS a dash of sediment...quelle surprise!). Nose was profound...did I state the finish was loooooong?
Some may have bitched (just sayin') about an aggressive oak regimen (I see it in the 10-year old PNs), but this was a perfect recipe, whatever he did.

is this syrah really 13 years old? The acidity is bracing, and perfect for food. Fantastic green olive notes on the nose and a wonderful bright cherry and smoked meat element. I think on it's own the acidity is a bit overpowering.... This could go... 10 more years? Just my opinion...

Amazingly young tasting. Delicious if somewhat monolithic.
