Freschezza senz'altro in primo piano.

Deep, almost opaque dark cherry red. Dark-toned nose with aromas of very ripe cherry, boysenberry, black tea, some earth and a slightest hint of brooding, savory wood. Rather full-bodied in the mouth with succulent flavors of prunes, dark cherries, juice dark berries and some astringent crowberries. However, these ripe and sweet flavors are counterpointed by touches of bitter spice and stony minerality. The acidity is medium to quite low, making the wine lose some of its edge and giving it a rather dull habitus. Tannins are grainy, but surprisingly low and easy, giving the wine very smooth and approachable mouthfeel. The mid-length finish follows the midpalate with flavors of blackberry, sour cherry, some berry, a hint of savory wood and a touch of stony minerality. Finally there is a slightest touch of alcohol (13%) warmth.
A smooth and easy Castel del Monte, being less rustic, a lot sweeter and more easily approachable than the other vintages of the same wine I've had - most likely the hot vintage of 2009 is the main culprit here. Still, this wine is a lovely Apulian red that is not ruined by excessive alcohol, residual sugar or liberal use of new wood. I'd say that the wine could use a little more edge and structure, although the bitter spiciness and stony minerality give some charm to the otherwise smooth and ripe fruit. An enjoyable example of Castel del Monte, but I'd recommend to check out the other vintages of the same wine, because this 2009 seems slightly anonymous compared to the other Vigna Pedales and the best Castel del Montes. At 12,93€ this was an ok purchase.

Nicely refined notes of wood and vegetal notes. Soft tannins. Personally didn't find it well balanced with very low acidity. Alcohol came through a little too much for my taste.

A well made wine with ripe fruits on the nose. However appears flat in the mouth since it lacks acidity and structure.
