  • Purchased 2019 from Benchmark. Dark red core, lighter rim. Beautiful complex nose with moist, dark earth, dark cherry, hints of mint and fresh green notes. Medium body, excellent balance, fruit and earthy notes in perfect harmony. Moderate aged complexity with plenty of acid and fruit to develop even more in the coming years. Drinking beautifully and should continue to do so for many years to come. Excellent.

  • Good but not as good as the 1989 and 1998

  • Hadn’t tried one in a few years, so I checked in on this again. Lively, classy, buttoned-down nose of plums, black cherry reduction, sur maturite, and a top note florals and mint. This is drinking surprisingly well, the fruit is semi-primary still but the structure is open and has shed most of its firmness. Very good energy and brightness to go with all that mint and a good core of ripe merlot. I think this is in its window now but not hard to imagine it getting a little better in 5-10. Maybe 92 pts right now, but hopefully 93-94 pts at its apogee.

Day 2, better on the palate, with more earthy fruit and wonderful notes of weathered, old wood and fresh-tilled soil. Still minty, almost eucalyptic, which is a nice foil to loamy elements. Clearly, this is still improving. 93+ pts.

  • Drank at 67
Open and alive, slightly too ripe.

  • For me this is a work in progress. Plenty of red fruit on the nose and palate, but it needs to unwind and settle down. I did decant but it didn't have much of an impact - although very enjoyable, in a typically subtle Magdelaine way, the finish was rather clipped and compact. To revisit in another three years I think.
