  • Purchased on release and perfectly stored at 57 degrees since. Really coming together, still boasts a core of black, sweet fruit, typical on '97, no real edges, it has integrated nicely, but these were pretty on release anyways, so I can't really say it's 'improved' with age. It is however still drinking really nice and isn't anywhere near fading. 91 points and we're running out of one our first favorite vintages...sniff...

  • In a blind tasting one might mistake this for a Margaux Bordeaux! Dark inky purple color, medium-full bodied; big floral perfume scents and flavors of violets and rose petals gives way to dark black berry and raspberry fruit flavors with complex layer of leather and tea with hint of earth and herbs on a moderate tannin finish. Amazing life left in this fifteen year old. Tasted at/with WConnolly's in a horizontal-vertical Sonoma cab tasting - see his tasting notes below.

  • Tasted side by side with the 2000 Rhinefarm. The 1997 is still showing extremely well and has life left. The color shows a bit of brick belying the fruit and freshness remaining in this wine. The nose is floral, almost perfume like. On the palate, the wine reveals lots of red fruit and smooth tannins. After an hour or so, it begins to reveal some additional layers of minerality and herbs. A delicious bottle. Very reminiscent of a Margaux. his was the last of a case purchased in 2000. Wish I had more.

  • Wow. I pulled this tonight on a whim...thinking "well, it might be over the hill..." Conversely, this bottle showed hardly any signs of age, as some of the NAPA 97 cabs have recently. It was deep red, full of body and life, and just singing. Many years ahead, but not for us as it was our only bottle. Way to go Sonoma.
