  • Well nearly Christmas, lunch with friends. Saturated cork that was slippery and shrivelled. Huge rancio nose of orange caramel, cumquat, hint of butterscotch, awesome. The note of verdelho like rings true. Very much alive in the mouth with super fine rancio/acidity with clean cutting lift of seville oranges, orange rind, caramel. What a privilege to drink a birth year wine that is as alive and kicking as this. These wines at their very best deserve their reputation of immortality. On extended airing a cola element appears, best within 60 min of decanting.
    I feel at peace.

  • A privilege to be drinking someting this old - like many Aszu of similar age, it is beautiful. This particular one was slightly more acidic with a slightly shorter aftertaste than other examples of similar age. Nonetheless very nice.

  • Very Maderia-ized nose, sweet caramel, nuts and wood but with an under tone of fruit. It also starts on the palate like a Boal but turns and the becomes unmistakably tokaj, with the tropical fruit notes and crescendo finish. Only open a day and looking forward to the next month. Much darker and nuttier than a 64 aziu essencia.

  • Dinner @ Phil and Jen's: Caramel, seville orange and nut nose. Dark colour. Definite rancio character with citrus peel elements. Nice sweetness, good acidics and pretty elements like apple tobacco. Finish is short and marred with stale coffee notes. Well done with dates and nuts though. An interesting mix of aged rum, Maderia and TBA elements, though not totally in sync. A joy and a treat regardless, which is what really counts.

  • Dinner with Andrew and Elena (Columbus, OH): Nose reminds me of a sweet Malmsey - limey with a caramel rancio character. More Verdelho-like on the palate, still very bright with great acidity. A strange "flat cola" like note near the finish. Very nice.
