Needed a good aeration. Now, more savory herb and black olive tapenade than black cherry fruit. Reminds me in fact of a quality, if rustic, Crozes Hermitage, with plenty of texture. 4 + 12 + 16 + 7.
(There was a suggestion of TCA taint -- a wet dog odor -- in this screw cap. So it is not cork taint TCA. Pronounced upon opening, it dissipated after an hour or two. We were about to pour the wine away, when lo and behold the wine was fine. TCA taint also can occur from contaminated wood barrels or other sources of wood or paper matter in which the fungi can grow.)

Tremendous fruit, blackberry, black cherry; initially soft and luscious, later taking on savory herbs and savage notes with air. As always with AMV, the oak is discreet, adding spice to accent the juice. Came across as a grapey Premier cru Beaujolais at first, but settled into a jaunty Syrah character, with a dose of easy tannin, a smidgen of smoke, and a rich mid-palate and medium long finish. 90+ Can be drunk now with an hour decant.

A touch of smoke on the nose and a bit lighter than other Thompson's tasted last night, but showed very well.
