This was one of the good bottles from my case, which had been compromised at some point in its life prior to my purchase a couple of years ago. This is a big wine which punches you in the face with a fruit bomb of flavours. I really like the wine, but it is showing its age on the finish, and certainly with my case, I am looking to drink my remaining stock in the nearer term.

Huge, big and opulent, with so much dense & ripe fruit. A bit overly hedonistic for me, but silky smooth and tasty. Maybe if I’d had this at a steakhouse or something I’d have enjoyed it more, it’s quite good!

I am starting to suspect that the case I purchased 18 months ago from a reputable major merchant had not been stored well. Some bottles are showing signs of heat damage with sherry raisin notes. When it is at its best it is a great wine. Even with good bottles I do feel that this has a limited shelf life.

ESTG Year-End Tasting (Newcastle, WA): Mmmm, exotic. Some VA. Powerful wine, fig and chocolate. A bit of alcohol showing. Insane raspberry core and killer tannins still. This is a rather extreme and eclectic 1990.

This bottle was pumping out the fruit from the minute it was opened. Ripe fruit, chocolate, leather, tobacco. Fruit dominates. Lots of bricking at the rim. Big, lots of depth and concentration, tannins still present but not intrusive. No faults that I can detect. Pristine cork. Open and decanted for about 2 hours before it was gone; with air it added depth and fat. For my palate, the fruit was too ripe and raisiny to really enjoy it.

(Troplong-Mondot) This had a beautiful nose of cocoa powder, mineral, dripping cassis, tar, touch of herbs and dark blueberry. Structured like a Medoc on the palate with oodles of just this short of sweet concentrated fruit. Beautiful detail and precision along with a long finish. Needed 45 mins to really strut it's stuff but a great example of this "left-bank, right-bank" St. Emilion.
