Deep golden, almost amber colour. It has that magical petro element that is such an unmistakable mark for old Rieslings. It goes in the direction of bonfire and smoke with some air and the percussion rubber boots is there to make it even more complete. That said it’s not just old stuff here, it’s still fresh and elegant after 26 years with nice sweetness to keep it very balance and just a deliciousness to drink. Granny Smith apples on the palate, ripe yellow ones on the nose. I wish this wine would never go empty.

AP #4-96. Rather sulfury at the outset, and though the sulfur blows off some with air, it doesn't really show the depth or clarity that I would expect from a Prum Spätlese of this age. There's fresh fruit, slate and a bright floral topnote, and it's a lovely Riesling but I'm left wanting a bit more in terms of both cut and complexity as it doesn't quite deliver at the level I usually expect from Prüm.

AP #4-96. No formal note taken but medium gold in color and still showing a little spritz. Effusive nose and still drinking quite young. Excellent wine.

C de Nuits Premier & Grand Crus (La Trompette, London): Mid greeny straw. Full, kerosine nose with a touch of lime. Ripe, rounded, still nicely sweet. Decent line. Nicely crisp. Fresh with good minerality and cut. Decent length too. This is very good and I prefer it to the auslese at the moment. ****

Very healthy light yellow color for its age. High toned flowers and petrol on the nose. Light weight with great acidity and papaya/lime fruit, minimal sweetness, terrific minerality. This is just hitting its stride and is a great throwback to the "pre-global warming" days of less opulent, less sweet Spatlesen. Wonderful wine and a great accompaniment to food. In my experience, this vintage is underrated.
