Glass: Zalto Bordeaux Popped and poured, drunk over two days. Clear, medium golden color. Clean, medium+ intense, developing nose. Exotic fruit, honey, mint, herbs create a multi-layered, deep and intense experience. On the palate sweet, but beautifully balanced by the high acditity. Only 7,5% abv. Lots of yellow stone fruit and exotic fruit, zest, lime and bitter orange notes. Beautiful density and tension, very juicy and a long, fruity finish. Has decades of future life ahead. 93

This seems like it's starting to drink well in an adolescent mode. Lime zest, floral notes, and some mint in the nose. The palate has some appreciable sweetness and a nicely fleshy texture appropriate for a Spätlese, but with the typical Saar brightness and the lightness characteristic of Zilliken's style. Overall great balance, and just entering its middle drinking window, though it's far from mature.

#03-13, 7.5% abv. To be honest, I'm not entirely sure why I opened this. It's probably not the best time to be opening 2012s right now, but the excuse was to sacrifice something just to check in on how the vintage was developing. Slightly mute nose, with a slatey kick and some sweet citrus notes as well. The palate retains some of the white-hot acidic character that I remember from tasting the vintage on release, but it is not as in-your-face anymore. This has a slightly rounder texture with an appropriate amount of sweetness for a Spätlese. Not the most expressive on the palate, at least on the first day.

Fine balance of sweetness and acidity. Generous peach and apple notes. Some subtle slate notes, though no petrol.
