  • Classic, but lacking the depth of better vintages.

    Golden notes with green hues.

Great acidity, whiffs of white flowers, wax, lemon oil, and a slate mineral note.

Palate is all apple, lemon, honey, mineral, with a cleansing finish that is long for the vintage.

  • Very Rhone; in this case with its waxiness ahead of its oiliness. Low acidity too, but there is some, and it’s charmingly within the gentle materiale. That lower acidity and lack of angularity means that the wine is undramatic… and it reminds how white CdP is renowned for being drink-young… but time with this wine gets me wanting to buy Janasse again. It’s like drinking a glass full of loving care. Lemon marmalade is puffed out by gentle vanilla and caramel, which are balanced by bitter flickers of lilac. With more air the edges being to… to purr! In the mouth it’s now about smooth stones, nestled in grapefruit pith. The next morning, from the bottle left on the table (ie, warm and with further potential oxidisation), it’s as good or better. Red or white, Janasse seem to do purity, concentration and the ability to genuinely soften with time or air. I’m going to need to get some really old ones to see whether there’s distinctive terroir underneath, but I’m not too concerned as they seem to do luxury at every age. Reliable luxury in wine is so rare: I’m a buyer again. 90 to 91, 91.

  • At Le M tasting. Waxy. Powerful, but then a lighter streak, which takes the lead. Signif acidity in finish - overtly dry. White pepper. Warmth, and a checking, cutting texture. In no way fat: there's a corset squeezing in the middle/waist and obscuring the view of the flesh/fruit(!!). However, the waxy feel, in combination with the way the inexpressive yellow fruit comes in a twist, is v impressive and promising. Flicks of green apple. Much later, when warm, a big dose of caramel in nose. Structures too big and young to make the wine fruity and accessible. Not a certainty will star: maybe this vintage doesn't have great fruit for example. Does have a shot though. Looking back, as I write up this note, I remain excited. 88++.

(Janasse Blanc Chateauneuf du Pape) #2; COLOR-medium golden; NOSE-quite funky; marzipan on the finish; kind of oily; smells like the back kitchen of a greasy fast food restaurant, but the marzipan kicks up on the finish; PALATE-very Viognier-like; comes across like a white CdP as it's bigger and bolder; I like this wine; really well made; beautiful wine; love it, although a little overpriced; RP-93; GV-90+
