  • Alsace Clone 49. A bit "fuzzy" meaning not clear, but something is happening here. Maybe the German oak is fussing it up?

  • 'Cuvée Molly Devine' named in honor of Sean O'Keefe''s second child.Cork-finished; part of the 'Eclectic' series. 11.8% abv. IRF scale mid-dry. Tasting sample of a $20/750 ml wine. Very fine carbon dioxide bubbles that don't disperse in the glass. Perfume, white tea, and crushed crabapple, with poultry/veggie consommé. Clean entry. Somewhat bitter, juicy, and on the dry side. Persistently herbaceous, somewhat meaty (sort of a chicken soup note), light-bodied. Finish clean, minty, sailing. Needs a couple years: drink 2015-2022. A finely vinted wine that will match well with food, especially cheese and meat: for instance imported Gouda. An Old Mission dry wine with lots of sun on the skins, so to speak; for style, I think I'd prefer the more delicate 2007. But undoubtedly a better table wine than that lovely sipper.

Statistics: 100 percent Riesling Clone 49, sub-block 49 of the Bailiwick Vineyard, planted early 2000s; first commercial bottling 2007. Sandy loam and glacial till (drumllin till, dune sand, and forest loam. Harvest 10/25/2012. Bottled 5/8/2013. 213 cases. Residual sugar 10.0 g/; Total acidity, 7.2 g/l; pH 3.04.

  • Tasting sample comped by Sean O'Keefe for MoCOOL 2013. From the small-batch 'Eclectic' series, designed to showcase this terroir. Grapes harvested from a west-facing drumlin (mixed glacial till) on the north part of Old Mission Peninsula (near Bowers Harbor and Neahtawanha). Retail approximately $20. ABV 11.8 percent. Thanks to JuliaB for delivering this to the Trombleyhof in Piqua. Fermented and aged in stainless steel and then in 1200-liter oak Stücke, presumably neutral. Ratings to follow.

  • Great wine for this young stage. Combination of some fruit with great minerality. Think this will age well. A bargain for $18 / bottle after the discount. Great for summer drinking at the cottage.
