What a difference bottle variation makes! Consecutive day and bottle with startlingly more positive presentation. No stewed tomato and balanced fruit nose and silky mouthfeel right after opening. Textbook expectations realized in a very well made moderately priced Chianti Classico Reserva. The previous doppelgänger reviewed last night is relegated to a limited group of disappointing Chianti Classico Reserva outliers this wine lover has encountered over the past 29 years. Both bottles shared the same ullage and lower cork coloration. If only one could have the resources to purchase at least 6 bottles of all wines finding their way into the cellar. On a associated tangent I must admit that of the six bottles of 1990 Chateau Latour purchased on futures so many years ago, and drunk over a 20 year time span, only one bottle was stellar, three bottles were very good, and two bottles were uninspiring, considering their pedigree. Perhaps the two sources, Big Y wines in North Hampton MA, and Gerhlings and Wade, could have contributed to the variation along with the multiple uncontrollable variables with which we must contend.

Initially maderized nose with no hint of 85% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot fruit aroma, but with a whiff of stewed green tomatoes. Overwhelming mouthfeel of Saharan sand followed by a Scirocco of desiccated tannins with a small central core of long ago memories of fruit throughout the short- lived finish. It would seem the viability of the drinking window of opportunity of a typical Chianti Classico may be far Less than I had assumed. Well cellared to no avail. Hopefully the other bottle of this wine will show more favorably. Perhaps grilled lamb later tonight will show, as of now, hidden attributes. Addendum to follow. With some time in a Riedel Bordeaux glass the off-putting aspects of the nose have diminished. The fruit is a bit more apparent but the tannins are still stubbornly present. With food the fruit is much more forward and the tannins are more tamed increasing my enjoyment and the score into the “I like this wine” category.

PnP.
Cherry soy sauce plum cola plum beef jerky on the nose.
Earthy rich deep and complex on the palate with flavours that follow the nose. A revelation. Lots of life ahead.

I could just cut and paste MHubbard's note here. And better with food (Lasagna from Serafini in Frankfort, Ky).
