Wine buyers note: Produced from some of Juan Antonio Ponce's oldest vines (75 years old to be exact), this calcareous clay parcel produces some excellent Bobal, the grape variety indigenous to the Manchuela D.O., just a few hours southeast of Madrid. Every bit as intense as his excellent "Pino" bottling of younger vine Bobal, this wine perhaps shows less tension and richer, more open knit dark fruit. It still is a Ponce wine, though, and as such it combines serious structure, intensely expressive fruit and minerality all in one.

A sweet nose with a Autumn linger, a off putting sweet note. Upon tasting, one word came to mind: slapdash. I think the vintners were shooting for a wine with power and an initial hit in the front of the mouth, where the sweetness lies. In doing so, they got what they wanted, but left the middle of the wine devoid of soul. It's too far dark, too far sweet, a little "brown" and "grey" in the center. Skip it.

Underripe dark fruit, plum skin, dry earth, and stemminess on the nose. Decent structure, but the underripe quality of the fruit makes this tart and unappealing after the first glass. Pairing with food (jamon bocadillo, goat cheese) didn't help it.
