  • Mid shoulder bottle. Very pale and cloudy. Left in a decanter for an hour and it was surprisingly good with a very clean nose. Still alive and maybe a couple of years before it dies but definitely not going to get any better!

  • Medium garnet, clouded. Mature nose and without flaw. Easy drinking, sound and carrying negligible tannin and very slight acidity. This wine was not complex or stimulating, except by virtue of its condition and age. It was something which easily could have been mistaken for the 1989 release, today. Thanks to Sylvia and Steve.

  • Cantemerle & Lagune Vertical; 6/28/2014-6/30/2014 (Dale's): This had a mid-shoulder fill and it showed on the nose which was semi-oxidized with stewed notes, but the palate still had plenty of oomph with good fruit. On other nights, I would drink this. Pristine bottles must be exceptional.

  • Drank over 1 hour at Rob's. Really a nice surprise. Fresh nose of leather, cedar and red and black fruit. Some slight funk quickly faded from the layered vibrant palate. Dark fruit and old wood. Great silky texture. Excellent balance and a medium finish.

  • served en magnum
An unpromising murky, polished mahogany colour. The nose is rather murky and has a dirty feel, with a touch of stink and furniture polish. This is almost dead, but you can see that there was some good stuff in there once. It is, however, just still drinkable, and tastes a lot better than the nose would suggest. It has a sweet sandy texture with some decent length.
Returning to the glass about an hour later, there was much more volatile lift on the nose, together with an overwhelming feel of death. It is, however, still much more drinkable than the nose suggests. The tannins are coming more to the fore, but it’s still drinkable. Definitely faded though.

(Chateau Cantemerle Haut-Médoc) From a magnum. This has a brown, murky appearance. The nose brings to mind treacle toffee and heavily stewed meat at first, with a nutty, vegetal character. It is clearly not in good shape. Surprisingly not dried out on the palate, well textured through the midpalate, but quite hot thereafter. A bit of sweetness. This has not collapsed altogether but is plainly over the hill, although I suspect this is not typical and that other bottles may be fine.
