  • Asking a lot to survive 40 years, but this magnum was still enjoyable. Still a nice ruby color. Very raisin-like aroma. Almost a sweet taste. Fun to enjoy. Not getting any better, but very pleasant.

  • I wanted to do an older bottle for a buddy's 50th birthday event -- but also knew there would be other bottles if this didn't work out. Although there was a bartender there, she wasn't much older than the bottle and the cork broke. We turned our attention to it and resorted to a strainer. First observations it wasn't bad before getting into glasses. Then poured for the honoree, his brother and myself for the first taste. They seemed quite pleased. I was getting some great historical Old Cab tastes but also picking up some of it being lightly corked or on the way thereto. So I kept my words to myself let others tell me they were very impressed yet caution them it could go bad at any moment. Very smooth and yet hints of old leather was one description I heard. People went back so I let that be the judge, ultimately I did too as even with its possible defect it was still better than other wine. Thankfully the event was about celebrating life through the years so the older, large format wine was a hit -- no matter what I (thought) was tasting.

  • I wanted to drink an older wine. I opened a 1985 Chateau Olivier but that turned out to be flawed. I turned to this wine and crossed my fingers. The cork broke and a piece fell in the bottle so I had to strain. Finally poured into my glass. Color is reddish brown with nose of faint dark and red fruits. An enjoyable understated wine. Earthy tones with hint of sour cherry. I am amazed that this is still quite lively. So different from today's big, fruit-forward wines.

  • This wine either lacks discernible notes or I lack the talent to describe them. I lean towards the latter. Some muted vanilla. Very nice overall wine.
