  • Bought 3b for 15/b on closeout from a local independent shop 19 years ago; this is #2. Solid, tight cork, stained barely above bottom. Decanted with normal sediment for its age. Medium purple with hint of amber edge; after a few minutes, rich redcurrant nose, some green herbs; mature red berry fruit, some green herbs, good mouthfeel--some improvement over 2 hours; some persistence. Delicious with marinara penne with multi-meat meatballs; glad I have more. Stored horizontally in a cool, dark basement since purchase. My evaluation: For me, scores on a "100-point scale" are misleading. I use a 4-category scale (perhaps with +/-)--not including flawed--which runs outstanding/notable/drinkable/poor. This is notable+ when considering quality, age, and price.

  • Deep dark brick in color, the nose was leather and spices. Tannins were like velvet with cherry, leather and a little tobacco. Old world in style this was a very nice wine. I thought it might be past its prime, and maybe it was, but is was really enjoyable. Even on the second night it was still beautiful

  • I had my retirement party this weekend (with 50 guests) and hit the jackpot. A friend with a cellar brought this wine which I managed with some difficulty to salvage for another day. Tonight we opened it at a smaller gathering (3), and it was superb. "Velvety" as my expressive wine loving friend put it. I could drink this for an extended period but as often happens in these cases we are on the last few drops. And we were already surfeited we thought, by a Mailly l'Intemporelle before opening it. I was thinking it was a shame this would be left undrunk after opening, until tomorrow. Not to worry. Soft but not old, fresh and fruity but ripe and generous. Perfect. Like a south carolina peach.

  • Forward nose of chocolate, leather, mineral, rounding black currant, pencil lead and toast. Med-full bodied with good acidity and balanced grip. Med-long finish.
