  • Was privileged enough to share a bottle with a collector from Melbourne. Despite its age, the wine was very much still intact and drinking amazingly. I would assume a lot would depend on cellaring conditions and good luck as this wine had a cork seal, but fortunately both were on our side with this bottle. Amazing texture and freshness despite its years, almost brown in colour but perfect length and structure, intense flavours of toasted hazelnut and marzipan, textbook aged Chardonnay. Mid-weight, gloriously fresh and enticing nose. Wow, just amazing. Best Chardonnay I have ever had.

  • Light glossy gold. This is a treat, a lovely mature chardonnay with full, ripe flavours and yet a remarkable freshness. Ripe, sweet nose with toasted hazelnuts and rich buttery lemon. The palate is clean and fresh with mouthfilling honeyed nutty flavours and a long toffee'd finish. Superb.

  • Cork crumbled. As I was extracting, I broke what was clearly a very good seal and an incredible aroma of butterscotch, mineral salts and citrus flowers just boiled out. Nice gold colour with good clarity. Nose continued on the same vein with fruit aromas and waxy elements. Very fresh and bright upfront. Nice oily texture on the middle bleeding into a satiny finish. Floral notes deepened into musky and rich. Slight sweetness. Good finish with a harmonious dry-down of all the previous elements. Really gorgeous stuff.

  • Tasted in a double blind tasting against two other old chardonnays, namely a Westfield 1996 and a Rosabrook 1998. It gave away very little on the nose, slight mocha overtones but no suggestion of fruit. Colour was a lovely bright clear rich gold. The palate was soft with distinct citrus flavours of lime and lemon and delivered more than had been promised by the bouquet. Many did not pick it as a chardonnay with aged semillon being a common choice. The wine was still drinking well but definitely past its best. Members were really surprised when the vintage was revealed at its true age. It was a pity not to have drunk this wine much earlier as it was a delicious but fading lady.

  • Year-End Wine Tasting -- Cellar Treasures (Trattoria Asti -- Austin): Great stuff. Kept getting better as the evening progressed. Wonderfully rich and fruity, yet not oaky and overbearing. Who says Aussies don't age? This was killer Chard.
