  • Consistent with earlier tasting notes, "The dark purple colour, is starting to subside to garnet color with a slight hazy brownish hue, full aroma of perfume and fruit - the diminution of fruit continues as this wine is showing its age further with ripe concentrated plum and blackberry and black cherry fruits hanging on but giving way to green bell pepper replacing the ripe raisin fig tones, accented by leather, smoke and a somewhat funky wet wood and cedar with a touch of vanilla and sweet cherry - tightly wound with a tinge of tight tannins and acid on the subdued fruit finish.'

  • This wine is improving markedly over time. A clear argument for decanting older wines. This one is not fragile it just becomes bigger over time unlike the 1994 Barolo that i drank last weekend - that i didn't bother posting about because it was just ok ...perhaps a 86. I expected more for that house and the average current selling price for that wine compared to this humble Ausie.
So back to the fine Balmoral.
Down in the cellar I had a 97 and a 98. of course i pulled the older bottle.
Give this one some air !
I stand impressed just how much this wine has transformed and opened up over the past 90min. It is becoming a monster and that isn't the wine talking.
Notes:Nose; cigar box cedar, mushroom with caramel popcorn elements.
Taste;Sweet fruit turns to sour dark fruit with firm tomato acidity and juiciness. Cedar drying finish with a lingering strawberry longevity.
Over time becoming much bigger with a round meatiness.
This is a wine to decant to enjoy to respect.
I have had so much luck with my older Australian wines ,of which i did not expect to age nearly as well as they have ,compared to a few of their French and Italian counterparts ... in some cases costing much more.
So so happy drinking this wine.
Amazingly complex flavours. Good on ya !

  • Drank in a vertical after 94 and 95. Feel bad I didn't have a 96, but it's not because I am against that year, simply didn't have one. The fact it was our third bottle between 2 people it's hard to rate. As I can't remember it. The bottles and beers prior had their desired affect. Drinking partner had 7 hours drinking time under his belt before commencing. In summary, the bottle was empty the next mornig so it couldn't have been too bad.
