6 hrs slow o. Strawberry, sandalwood, old balsamic. Surprisingly smooth and mellow. Acidity good but not bracing. Very fine tannins. Fruit is a little subdued but the overall package is very harmonious. Score. 93. Relative to expectations: 0, mostly because old Baroli are so expensive.

Stunning, if anything a step up from the last bottle. More sweet fruit on the nose, gorgeous complexity on the palate. Long long peppery finish. Amazing how these ‘78s have so much life and depth. A standard for well aged Barolo in my experience.

Really interesting older wine, very enjoyable. After 4+ hour decant, the nose alternated between earthy, leathery, slightly sherried notes with rich red strawberry and iron. The palate had surprising youth and vivacity, dark cherry fruit, leathery earth, acid and some tannins still. Long long tart finish. Smoky acid great with roast pork shoulder.

1978 Barolo & Barbaresco with The Rare Wine Company (Del Posto, NYC): Blood. Nose deep and complicated, medicinal, sandalwood, saline; but no viscera which often comes with this particular set of aromas. Very youthful on the nose. Palate big, taut, tannic; dark fruits. Needs quite a lot more time in the bottle. Good length.

2015 Villa d’Este Wine Symposium - Kelly and Kevin's excellent adventure; 11/3/2015-11/9/2015 (Villa D’este, Lake Como): A bit rustic but incredibly youthful nose displaying dry red fruits, dry red cherry, anise, roasted chestnut, tar, decaying wet leaves, rusted metal and earth. Really structured wine, still shows mouth puckering acidity and tannins. A bit rustic but incredibly youthful.
