Italian tasting for the Friday Group, at our house:
Reds: 2008 Palari Faro, 2010 Giuseppe Gabbas Cannonau “Dule,” 2008 Cantine sardus Pater Carignano del Sulcis Superiore “Arruga,” 2014 Elena Fucci Aglianico del Vulture “Titolo,” and 2011 Oasi Degli Angeli “Kurni.”
The Faro was probably the most elegant of the reds served. Dark garnet color. Nuanced nose of red and dark fruits and some spice, a little bit of cinnamon. Smooth and balanced palate, red fruit and plenty of structure. Long finish. WOTN for me, less so for others. Hard to explain, maybe because they are mostly French fans, and expected something different? 94
The Dule was the most resolved of the reds, and best liked by most at the table. Cannonau reportedly is related to Grenache, this perhaps explains much. This could have been at home at one of our southern Rhone tastings. Fruity and spicy, nice structure, food friendly, but could also sip. 92
The Arruga was perhaps the least distinctive, but a very good wine. A touch of sweetness after the Dule, but good structure. 91
The Titolo was decanted for about two hours. Probably needed about 2 days. Big, big wine. Tannins were quite prevalent, but so was massive amounts of fruit. This will be quite good, just needs time. 94
The Kurni is a cult wine of sorts, according to Stan the Wine Man, from whom we got it. But it was very sweet, apparently owing to about 10% dried grapes in the mix, not unlike Amarone. It was the most anticipated wine, due to the cult pedigree, but the most disappointing. 85

Dark ruby to purple color is a suggestion of this wine's intensity and complexity. Dark fruit flavors give way to hints of leather and smoke for a smooth finish. Very enjoyable. Drinking well now but has the structure to lay down for another 3 or more years.
