  • The nose was hauntingly dark and intense, opening with a mix of cedar dust with dried roses, black cherries, and menthol, yet seemed to unfold in the glass, as its fruit evolved toward black raspberry, gaining richness and depth. On the palate, I found silky, almost creamy textures, offset by zesty acids and spice as a mix of black cherry, saline-minerals and youthfully grippy tannin collected on the senses, showing incredibly young and full of life. The finish was long and structured, promising many years of further evaluation, as dried cherries, dark spices and minerals lingered on and on.

I must admit, that the '97 Corino Vigna Giachini really surprised me, as it's one of the most balanced and well-maturing '97s that I've had in a long time.

  • Really lovely on PNP. Opened at family vacation and it was gone before I got much of it. One relative said it was the best thing he had put in his mouth in 60 days. Lovely smooth and complex. 1997 is a good vintage to drink while I wait for the 1996s.

  • Red cherries, blackberries, flowers, earth, plums, new leather, and graphite on the gorgeous nose. Red cherry, tart cherry, plum, earth, licorice, a little aged wood, and a hint of fennel seed on the palate. Good acidity, mostly resolved tannins, long finish. Wow, so good. The kind of wine that makes you realize why you love nebbiolo. I'm sad to finish the bottle.

  • Exquisite. A friend bought half a dozen of these on release and this is the first bottle he's opened--and it couldn't be more en pointe. Perfect aged barolo flavors and in a good place for years to come. My WOTN.

  • Annual Piemonte Trip - 2018 Edition; 10/12/2018-10/14/2018 (Piemonte, Italy): A curiosity bottle opened at the end of a very beautiful and long lunch at Ciau del Tornavento. Opened alongside the 1996 Enzo Boglietti Barolo Case Nere.
Palate fatigue had taken the tall on us by the time this was served and thus not a full TN or rating. Solid wine though, well aged and very pretty across. That been said the fact that it was pristine kept over the years in the cellar of Toravento means anything else that hasn't would be very different.
