  • Pleasant wine.....no degradation, and some evolution after three days open. Nicely balanced, sweet but it comes across as moderately so, more like many a modern Kabinet. Nice acidity, medium minus finish. I suspect this will be better in half a dozen years. Very good, but not displaying the fireworks of some of the 2012s I've sampled. 89-90

  • Merkelbach has always been an under the radar producer, likely because they neverwent in for the bigger is better, auslese as kabinett, beerenauslese as spatlese styles. This spatlese is indicative of an adherence to tradition, with low to moderate sweeetness, balanced acidity and a striking minerality. The tell tale spice and strawberry elements of the Wurzgarten are there in abundance as well, wrapped up in an elegant, drinkable (gulpable?) package.
