  • Decanted and initially it had a very musty unpleasant smell and muted palate. This took about 30 minutes to blow off and then it was clear this was a great mature shiraz. Great density and body, tiny tannins still present, long fruit panoply red blue and everything in between. A joy to drink.

  • NobleRottersSydney - mostly Penfolds (Fix, St James, Sydney): {cork, 14.5%} [Graeme] Double-decanted two hours earlier off plenty of sediment. Still has the rich blueberry and sweet cedary oak it had back in its youth. It’s a mass of jammy fruit and oak, as though Penfolds had invented it specifically to cash in on the Parker-driven US demand for Barossa shiraz. This is a super-ripe, extracted style, just avoiding dead grape or raisin flavours; a very ‘un-Penfolds’ red. It’s plenty drinkable, with lots of blue and red flavour, but maybe it’s a bit obvious and simple – one-dimensional – in the way the other Penfolds reds weren’t tonight.

  • So I bought a cellar; 11/12/2022-12/31/2030: Wow - this wine showed well. Opened a few good ones with friends after they hosted us for the Charles Schwab challenge at colonial. This followed the Jonata Flor, with takeout Indian food.

I opened with a Durand, but the cork was in good condition. A little soft, but very little seepage. Initial musty nose that blew off fairly quickly, but the nose otherwise was not strong or distinctive. Maybe a bit alcoholic, and I was concerned about EA. But the palate was much different. Prevalent blue and black fruit, with a bit of a prune/leather undertone. But the fruit was first. A little sweet before food - which I think was inline with the style at the time, and looking for Parker scores - but with the spicy-ish Indian food, it was a perfect match. Complex with a decent finish, lots of sediment at the end, and the last glass was a bit more pruney after several hours of air. Overall a great experience.

  • Smoked meats with Jason: Similarly ripe, candied fruit to the HOG with more overt dark red fruit, mocha and menthol notes. Made in a big-boned, powerful and ripe style that was in vogue at the time.

  • Probably the same bottle as the 2019 comment.
Still vital and complex in a nice maturity stage. Seems very balanced and harmonious despite several Coravin tappings. This 1998 is just getting better every time. Still have a bottle or two that I will save another 4-5 years, shouldn't be a problem.
