Domain Marcel Deiss, a 25 year retrospective, with Mathieu Deiss (E&R, Portland, OR): Funky, bitter aromas of rotting scabby meat. Great palate entry, which is very soft and involving initially, with notes of candied lemon, melon, and plenty of minerality, but very seductive and soft. Puckering finish, but pretty smooth and spicy. Tart, with some metallic notions. Interesting that this bottle wasn't as oxidative as the one from a few months back, but I didn't enjoy it as much. After drinking this, Mathieu commented that this is drinking too young. The vineyard is limestone and clay, and develops botrytis every year, and they let that happen as the skin to berry ratio needs more time to mature.

The wines of Domaine Marcel Deiss (E&R Wine Shop, Portland OR): Rich and hefty aromas, similar to the 2009 but actually smelling a bit less oxidized. Similar aromas, just more mellow here. Really creamy and soft palate, but an odd texture and slightly weird flavors. More oxidative notes with some light lemon curd. Really chunky as it moves around the palate; decent acidity. Really big and spicy finish. Lovely flavors but again perhaps too much on the oxidized side.

Nice deep yellow color. Nose of baked apples, honey, and bruised peach. Round, viscous, and soft in the mouth. Nice finish including grapefruit and honey, with just a touch of heat. A pleasure.
