Great Older Wines at the Place to Drink Great Older Wines (Tampa FL): Opened and decanted 2+ hours. Very backward when first opened, seemingly black. Floral and spiced when served with both black and red fruit, alongside earth hints, but so fresh for its age. Incredibly elegant in glass, this kept evolving and unfolding in exciting ways.

Old Friends, Old Wine Weekend-Red Burgundy, Rioja, Barolo, and a Few Germans; 1/12/2018-1/14/2018 (Various Venues): Deep, primary ruby. Incredibly fascinating aromatics-at different points, blackberry, smoke, tobacco, game. Big, powerful, and packed with coffee, ripe red and black fruit, fantastic acidity, and strong minerality. Powerful and penetrating with grainy tannins that make themselves felt over time. Profound. Another year, another great bottle of this, but not for those seeking delicacy in red Burgundy.

Birthday dinner at Bern's. Believe me - I wanted to love this. The somm said that people either love it or only just like it. Count me in the latter group. This was a rare treat to have something from the world’s hallowed ground of Pinot Noir. Expressing more dark fruit flavors, it took a while for it to expand in the glass. The nose was dominated by an expression of roasted marshmallow that I have also found in examples of Marcassin. This wine was better in the morning than it was the night before, in my opinion, after it had shed its roasted marshmallow element and turned from darker fruits to a more integrated red-fruit bouquet. But, overall, this wasn't what I wanted from a red Burgundy Grand Cru.

Starts of bright red cherry with high acidity. Blinded I would have guessed 96. This wine improves by the hour. Black fruits and a hint of soy and smoke. A lot lingering savoriness on the finish. I agree this is reminiscent of of an aged northern Rhone. This palate and nose builds for 3 hours and I suspect these bottles will take another 1-2 decades to peak.
