  • A lot of bottle variation in this wine. Last time I took a note in 2020 it felt very young. I've had a corked bottle between now and then. And now I've had the chance to see it again as it approaches maturity.

It's looking excellent, a bit past mid life. Took a little while to open up all of its umami character, the floral perfume noted back in 2020 has made way for much more developed character.

I preferred it at age 9, at age 12 its turned a corner. Still excellent, but it's lost the florals that I loved in this wine.

Was open for 2 hours, it still had more to show. Decant long, watch it over a day.

    Excellent. Drink now.

  • Two hours' aeration and this has such sexy presence. Floral throughout, this offers bright strawberries, cinnamon, and singed rind; a core of macerated red fruits with mustards, herbs, and plum skin; then gentle fire and a caressingly sour grip. The barely discernable oak etches a pert, intellectual finish. Drink now-2026.

  • Four Piemontese drunk at home over several evenings (Wellington, NZ): A shade lighter, and more ochre, than the Currá. A bouquet of sour red cherries, cedar, sawdust, damp and dry soil and faint red rose perfumes. On palate, this bottle is now much more open than described in my 2019 note. Red cherry, orange citrus, tar, sottobosco and a hint of menthol. Elegant and cultured. Sandy tannins. A little below mid weight but dense and structured. Not lacking in ripe, rich fruit. In good balance and proportion. The alcohol on the label (14.5% ABV) a surprise - there is no alcoholic burn. Currently, in my view, drinking better than the Currá, generally considered to be the superior vineyard. Drink until at least 2032.

  • Floral nose of rose petal, violets, red cherries, and a sweet cedar note. A good amount of tannins, but quite well integrated with good acidity and flavors of blood orange, tar, cherries, and more floral notes on the palate. Good finish. Really quite a nice wine, the oak is not distracting and it’s already drinking quite well.
