I had the always interesting opportunity to compare this bottle to La Pousse d’Or’s 2013 Volnay 1er Cru from Clos des 60 Ouvrées, which I found underwhelming. This was not the case at all with this bottle from the 2012 vintage - in fact it was the total opposite to the 2013 that felt very rustic and almost hibernating when had in January of this year. The 2012 La Pousse d’Or Volnay 1er Cru offering from Les Caillerets was singing on the night as notes of redcurrants, minerality, licorice and a hint of herbs worked in tandem before a meaty, gamey, tertiary lingering finish kicked in. This is drinking extremely well right now, balancing a fruitier mid-palette with a more tertiary finish. A bottle I’m definitely hoping to revisit.

Tasted double blind. Clearly a charming young Burg, I really liked the bright red fruit and baking spice, just found it slightly one-note. But this is rarely close to my favorite Pousse d'Or Volnay.

Excellent nose of bramble and aromatic herbs. Plum and earth flavors making up this chewy and round Volnay.

In a good place but there could be some more improvement over the short.
Plenty of stuffing and lift. Herbs, fruit, mineral in a balanced tea.

Nose: cabbage in a stable pretty intense for such a young wine. Very burgundian.
Attack: silky earth not that intense.
Mipalete: Sourness, cabbage, plums, minerals, cherries, silky tannins. pretty full body. Very open.
Finish: Long and sour with silky tannins.
This wine is a great value burgundy that will develop for a while. Very food friendly. Something tells me that is should be drunk before 2020.
